Is There a Combolands Demo?
What players are saying about it being gone
A launch-week thread titled "Where is the demo?" was opened by someone who kept seeing people discuss the demo and could not find it. The replies were short and consistent: it was pulled, it probably should come back, and at least one person said they would not buy a game like this without trying it first. The developers have not replied to that thread.
The demo was not the game you would be buying
This is the part worth knowing if you are hunting for an old build. The demo changed substantially over its four public versions, and the biggest change — v7 in June — replaced the Maritime guild with Martial and rebuilt how progression unlocks. Maritime only returned for the 1.0 release. So even the last demo build was missing a guild that the community now votes the strongest, and had a different unlock structure.
Demo version history
| Version | Date | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| Demo v6 | 2026-04-17 | Ghost Paint added. Ranch husbandry score cut from +40 to +30; railway placements 2→3; plateau placements 3→4. |
| Demo v7 (the "new demo") | 2026-06-05 | The big one. Progression overhauled so guilds, buildings and heirlooms unlock gradually instead of all at once; semi-procedural maps replaced the fixed map; new unlock system and victory screen. Maritime was pulled and replaced by the Martial guild, with Maritime promised for the full release. The previous demo stayed available on an old_demo branch. |
| Demo v8 | 2026-06-09 | Effigy infinite-fire bug fixed. Wall placements 5→6, palisade 7→9, plateau 4→5, rail 3→4. |
| Demo v9 | 2026-06-15 | Final Next Fest patch. Three new potions; quest refresh for gold; endless mode unlocked sooner; shop dismiss cost cut from 5 to 3; Manure and Composter rewritten; Honeypot 0.2→0.3 mult. |
Full text of each patch is in the patch ledger. These notes are also where most of the game's published numbers come from — the placement counts on the terrain page and several building effects have never been restated since.
How to evaluate it without a demo
- The Steam review score. 630 of 646 reviews positive on 2026-08-30 — 97.5%, rated Overwhelmingly Positive. Our review page covers what the negative ones say.
- The launch trailer, embedded on our homepage, is the developers' own current footage rather than demo footage.
- Steam's refund window is the practical fallback, and a run is designed to take about 30 minutes — so a couple of runs fits comfortably inside two hours.
- The mechanics pages here describe the released build, not the demo: scoring and triggers, the nine guilds, and the 21 combinations.
